Kendra's Story
My name is Kendra Rodriguez and I'm Deaf. I wear a cochlear implant on my right ear, deaf on my left. ASL is my primary language, English too, but I prefer ASL, it's just how I naturally communicate. I've been interpreting for two years now, and it feels great to use my language to help others connect and understand each other better.
ASL has connected me to the Deaf community and allowed me to bridge communication gaps. Emotionally, it's empowering to use my native language to support others. I feel the Deaf community can appreciate someone who communicates in ASL. Professionally, it's given me purpose and pride in making a real difference every day. It is very rewarding and I have a great team of interpreters!
ASL is more than a language, it's expressive and I always say this: "ASL is like painting a 3D picture." Meaning it's so expressive and visual for sure, you're not just using your hands, you're using body movement and face to bring the meaning to life! (I hope that made sense!) It's a rich connection to Deaf culture and community. Be patient with yourself, stay open to learning, and don't be afraid to make mistakes. I've made mistakes and ASL is my language, so don't be hard on yourself! It's a journey worth taking, and the relationships you build along the way will make it all meaningful!
